The first of his family to go to college, Hogan never expected to come so far. He originally hoped to become a political reporter, but "got the history bug" while studying political history. He later decided to spread his knowledge by becoming a teacher but confesses of his progress that "you just don't imagine that happening to yourself... although I like to think that at every stage when an opportunity presented itself, I was at least prepared for it."
