"You will have fights over turf, but our conflicts have to end, for the good of the university," said UConn Board of Trustees member Phil Barry after the speech.

"It was a great speech," Barry said. "[Hogan] is zeroing in on moving this institution to the next level."

"The academic plan is very broad-based," said Pharmacy Practice department head Marie Smith. "A lot of departments will find that they have a way to identify with some part of that plan.

"I'm energized and excited," said Smith. "I have been in other places where collaboration was the norm, and I am glad to see support for it here. We have a nice model in our department, where 75 percent of our faculty members are in the community, to teach our doctorate of pharmacy students. In the academic plan, we are aligned with Health and Human Behavior. We line up well with that [topic]."

The Office of University Events said the inauguration ceremony was held in April because it took a long time to arrange the weekend of dances, fireworks, and gatherings, and because the university wanted to wait until the weather warmed up to hold the event.
